Embracing Transition - Things to do when it seems to be falling apart.

Things fall apart often and we should expect that or nothing at all.  It's quite natural and we are a part of nature.  Transition is a part of living. No changes ...no worthwhile life. Sitting here in the middle of summer and looking at the leaves that had dried and fallen to the ground  in my backyard  while  I watched over playtime, my niece declared "It's going to be fall soon!"  I smiled at her and said " You're 5 years old, don't rush it..you'll have to go back to school!" She responded, " I know! I get to start first grade and I'm going to be the youngest in my class. I love school!" Who can argue with that embrace of transition, a positive spin, optimism and enthusiasm? Lesson  - When things seem   to fall apart (and they often will)...be optimistic as to what opportunities and new experiences come with the change. Better than that, here is a list of 10 things to do when things fall apart. Be it an illness, job lo...

We are blessed beyond measure and then there's East Africa

How do we define necessity?  Must we have peanut butter and jelly on our bread?  It's a favorite treat of American children (sans the peanut allergies).  I certainly had it growing up with my sister and brothers and we had our choice of bread in my family's kitchen too.   My parents provided us with white, wheat, Jamaican hard dough and it was in abundance. We grew up well fed. We  were and are blessed beyond measure. A well respected mentor of mine used to say to me, "Better than I deserve" this was his answer when I asked how he was doing.  As I look at our survival in this time of global unrest, war, suffering, economic and social crisis,  I know now that he actually meant, "Blessed beyond measure in comparison to the rest of the world."  Drought, famine, warfare and factions, spiritual unrest,  the absence of birth control, disease is prevalent.  Children are suffering and dying. These are the things that have...

Show some respect. He is not your companion. He is your Commander -In - Chief.

The blatant and horrid disrespect of our Nation's President started long before the State of the Union address where he was called a " liar"  and continues with  even worse name calling and racial attacks. Our President may be referred to as the following:  " Mr. President", "The Honorable Barack Obama", "His Excellency,  Barack Obama", and of course President Obama.  Nothing less is acceptable. Even referencing him by first name alone (as many people do) is out of line unless you are First Lady Michelle Obama. While I think we are a global family, I also think these ongoing episodes do much to  further segregate America and give it the image of our country as a place of disgrace, disuntity, and hate. Imagine trying to explain it to a 5 year old who followed the campaign and elections with her family and proudly declared that " Our President is Barack Obama and Ms. Michelle looks like my Nana." (*my heart breaks for ...

Mid-month marketing maxims for brands in the digital age - Adrienne A. Wallace

It's been a while since I posted about the marketing game. I got  an email with a pretty good question from someone working on a smaller marketing communications project. She wanted to know what needs to happen in order to drive the brand to "favorite status" in a competitive field.  I shared what I think are some basics (beyond being situated and active in social media). Everyone is jumping on the social media band wagon, but there are some  foundation basics that could best be employed to support  the success early on. A brand being established as a favorite place "on line" requires a few of things: 1) A portal that is easy to access via mobile and pc without exception to software 2) Audible  AND Visual features that visitors can select. The pop up - take over thing is not exactly welcoming. 3) the ability to share content via email and social pages  4) Opportunities to PERSONALIZE; integrate items personal to you; pictures  and video without ...

LETTING GO....

L-E-T-T-I-N-G    G-O You have seen these words before..yes? Very simply written in nine letters. “L e tting  go .” Why does it make you uncomfortable?  It is simply an action that you as a human being experience every single day, just by physically and chemically existing.  It is an action that occurs when you have complete trust in your intuition ; that heaven sent voice inside of you. You know the one you may not always agree with, but the angels are so fond of you ..they send it into your ears, head, heart , and sometimes your eyes? If you are reading this your eyes open and they shut very quickly ..it is called "blinking" but in fact it is letting go and it happens very quickly. As we blink old light goes away and we allow new light to come in …seeing the next moment. As you turned on your computer or device you may have pressed a button, touched the screen, flipped a switch. As you clicked on your mouse, stroked and released keys on the k...

Evaluation and Salutation of A MAN ( an advance thought as Father's Day 2011 approaches)

In evaluation and salutation of A MAN... I love the men in my life. I am very blessed to have them.  Many of them are examples of men who are loyal to their friends, families, women and their children.    They are all this and yet not perfect and they don't claim to be. As, I sit here a week from Father's Day and think ...what will I get for my Dad(?) I think about the structure of men. As for my Dad, this is a man who has never ever asked for anything of me other than to' go to school and be happy'. This is the man that was up at 5:30AM every morning to see to it that my sister and I got to 7 AM track practice when he was raising us in Texas. He's part of the reason I was a 9th Grader running Varsity and breaking records. (*discipline) This is the same man that when we were just 'itty -bitty girls' picked my sister and I up from the airport after a trip to visit with our Grandparents in Jamaica and instead of taking us direc...

You, ME and HIM

My dear friend who lives all too far away asked me how she could go about communicating the end of a relationship to someone who she loses courage to let go of  when they are face to face. She said it was only because she 'cannot stand the look of devastation that would be in his eyes'. I told her the "devastation" was stringing that person along when she knew it was over.  She said, "He is not the 'him' that I need or want." I then told her to write about it. I find that for those of us tied( professionally and personally) to media and artistic expression, it is easier to get it out that way. We read look or listen to it and all of a sudden ..courage to make it happen face to face comes along. In fact, I think this works well for almost anybody. She said she would try and in my own knowing of myself and imagining what I would do if the situation were mine, I wrote a piece that would be my spiritual and poetic truth if I had to cut the wrong one...
